On 22nd September 2026, students received an email invitation to attend the launch of the Iron Pillar Initiative in Global Learning (IGL). This is a new joint initiative, for which the inaugural ceremony took place on 28th September at Dr. Reddy’s Auditorium. To further on-campus experiences at Ashoka, IGL is introducing an intensive elective course, Global Investments, Geopolitics, and Leadership, as well as the Science Storytelling Lab. Core objectives include reinforcing Ashoka’s existing academic foundations by bringing leading researchers in and creating avenues for collaboration.

The endeavour is further targeted towards highlighting global approaches towards interdisciplinary learning, launching international-level internships, and creating research opportunities. It reportedly emerged through recent conversations with faculty leadership and partners as a visionary project.

The launch featured an opening lecture by Professor Michael Spence, a 2001 Nobel Laureate in the Economic Sciences for his work on market signalling. Dr. Spence focused his talk on various factors, following a broad and daring scope of the rapidly evolving changes in the global economy, as well as the direction of the AI revolution both in the past decade and currently. He pointed out the Indian economy as being at its highest potential growth stage because of the benign structural conditions, GDP, and the sheer size of the human capital.

This was then followed by a panel discussion on the Iron Pillar, a growth investing entity focused on aiding Indian entrepreneurship in emerging technical areas (‘Building From India for the world’). Key organisations affiliated with IGL include, but are not limited to, the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) in Tokyo, Druk Holdings & Investments in Bhutan, the Gelephu Mindfulness City Authority, and CERN.

This is a landmark opportunity, the first of its kind that Ashoka has seen, embodying the philosophy of opening various avenues headed by the top professionals in their field. It paves the way for quality research and learning which moves beyond the classroom space. How far it will go, as of yet, remains to be seen.
