The Batch Championships 5.0 Report
If Green Day were bigger fans of the SEC Batch Championships, they’d never have recorded “Wake Me Up When September Ends.” Their loss, as that glorious purpose falls to us at Edict Sports — and across five days, 17 sports, 294 Instagram stories and heaven knows how many posts on X (formerly Twitter), it was a purpose we embraced with open arms.
Two-time defending Batch Champions UG2023, chasing a record-extending threepeat, finished runners-up in their final-ever Batch Championships — finally being dethroned by the UG2025s, who resumed the trend of sophomores lifting the trophy, after UG2023 at BC3.0, UG25 at BC2.0 and UG24 at BC1.0.
That result was achieved in some style too, with a dramatic gold in cis-men’s football, the final event of the tournament, late on Sunday night.
Fans at the football field were treated to not one, but two fantastic showpiece matches. The non cis-men final saw two stacked AUWFC teams go head-to-head in the third-years and the freshers. The defending champions UG202Ate came out 1-0 winners, courtesy of an Aania Muthreja goal, to retain their crown, but were pushed all the way by the UG2026_Playmakers in a nail-biting encounter. In the cis-men draw, an all-AUMFC UG2024_Nyash FC v UG2025_Gazalona tie draw raised the tantalising possibility of a rare UG2024 sweep; but it was not to be. A viciously contested final followed, with both teams looking for their first Batch Championships gold, before a late goal by Armaan Jamal secured a 2-1 win and the title for the second-years.
The basketball finals too saw no dearth of entertainment. A Kaitlyn Machado masterclass in the non cis-men final saw UG2023_Who Da Girls? trump UG2025_And One 26-17 in a glorious final hurrah for the graduating batch. The cis-men final was altogether more closely contested between UG2024_Deep Penetrators and UG2025_Redemption, with the third-years edging the tie 23-18 in the dying seconds to seal the gold.

The sunken field played host to UG2023_Power of Friendship’s last Batch Championships bow, and the Ashoka Frisbee team core did not disappoint, with captain Yashwanth Reddy leading them to a hard-fought gold against the UG2025_Skywalkers. The YIF27s, led by Indian Ultimate international Luxman Kumar Rai, took home the bronze medal.
The graduating seniors continued their strong campaign with gold medals in tennis, badminton and beach volleyball.
The tennis final saw a battle of the Ashoka Tennis leadership, as UG2023_Team Vaibhav (led by the titular Ashoka men’s team captain Vaibhav Jain and women’s vice-captain Saima Mehta) beat women’s team captain Anushka Garimella and men’s team vice-captain Naman Anshumaan’s UG2024_Panache.
In badminton, Ashoka captain Maya Prashanth Seshadri led UG2023_1/2 Knees & Elbows to victory over teammates Roja Roy and Aditi Bajaj’s UG2026_Smashers.
Meanwhile, in beach volleyball, UG2023_Yo Yo Shashi Singh (boasting AUVB stars Tanish Parmar and Vaishnavi Saumya) beat UG2026_DhaPaNi to sign off in style from their last-ever championships.
The first-years would redeem themselves at the volleyball court, though, with UG2026_Spartans beating an AUMVB star-studded UG2024_Volley Champs to win the first and only gold medal for their cohort at this year’s Championships. Meanwhile, UG2025_PB&J settled for bronze. UG2023 did not field a team.
The shooting range brought the biggest single-event gold haul for UG2023, with Arja Kakkad, Agnim Agarwal, and Advay Awasthy all winning gold in their respective rifle and pistol categories. A strong showing from the freshers also saw them produce two different double-podium silver-and-bronze finishes.
Earlier, UG2024_Adi Sixers took on the PhD Scholars in an epic cricket final. Knocks by Amit Ranjan (37 off 17) and Mayank Saini (23 off 9) propelled the Scholars to a daunting total of 75/1. The chasing UG2024s looked down and out after losing wickets quickly, until Kabeer Wadhwa arrived at the crease, smashing 41 runs off 13 balls to chase down the target with a ball to spare and drag the UG2024s to the most dramatic of unlikely victories.

Pickleball saw UG2025s Vedaant and Arnav Yadav beat SEC President Shaan Kejriwal to claim gold. UG2024 Kejriwal, who was without partner Paarsh Bafna on Sunday, played 1v2 in the semifinal and won 11-0, 11-8, but the handicap proved a step too far in the final, where he was defeated 11-6, 11-5.
Squash saw an all-UG2025 final, with men’s team captain Ved Bubna beating batchmate Vairaj Singh to the gold. In the non cis-men draw, former team captain UG2023 Mehek Anand took home the gold, while UG2026’s Kshamakshi Jain had to settle for silver. Incumbent captain Aruja Saraf bagged bronze for UG2025.
The cis-men’s table tennis final saw a passing of the baton between Ashoka men’s captains, with incumbent Udayveer Agarwal’s UG2024_Smash and Spin beating predecessor Shaarav Garg’s UG2023_Ball Smashers. NCM table tennis brought one of the two golds for the MA/PHD/YIF cohort. Women’s table tennis captain Mauli Sharma, an India international and MA student, won the NCM TT draw. Aanya Jaidka (UG2026) and Aditi Parmar (UG2025) won silver and bronze, respectively.
The other MA/PHD/YIF gold came in chess courtesy of YIF Anfas Muhammed. Vishuddh Nishchhal (UG2025) and Rajit Mundhra (UG2023) rounded out the top three.
Swimming featured a number of strong medal hauls from UG2025 athletes, notably Ayanna Raha (3 golds), Faizan Sabarwal (2 golds) and Rohan Marballi (1 gold, 1 silver), who also delivered a mixed relay team gold together. Udai Vir Kharb (UG2023, 1 silver, 1 bronze) and Anoushka Chagas Pereira (UG2026, 1 silver, 1 bronze) also won multiple medals, while the mixed relay saw a silver-and-bronze double podium for UG2023.
Pool, too, brought a double podium for the fourth-years, with UG2023_Newbs and UG2023_Pocket Rockets achieving silver and bronze, respectively. Freshers UG2026_Gislay took home the gold.
Meanwhile, at the gym, the bench press competition saw UG2025 win 8 medals (including 4 golds). UG2023 won three medals, while UG2024 and UG2026 won two each. Sophomore Ruhan Adri was the pick of the draw, with a gold in the mixed team category (alongside batchmate Aditi Vadhavkar) and a joint-bronze in the men’s below-70kg category (with UG2023 Abdikarim Esse).
Rounding off the Championships was the debut of a dance competition, in collaboration with Abhinaya. UG2025_Baddest Bitches in LA (featuring Abhinaya society head Riddhi Kwatra) took home the inaugural gold.
Edict Sports would like to thank the Batch Championships Organising Committee, the Sports POCs, the marketing and social media teams and the entire Sports Enthusiasts Club for their collaboration in our coverage of the SEC Batch Championships 5.0.
The Championships have defined our monsoon calendar throughout the four years of our undergraduate degree — and, as only the second cohort to participate in four editions of the Championships, amidst all the adrenaline-filled action, was a strange sense of melancholy and nostalgia for me, experiencing my last Batch Championships as a reporter for The Edict and as an athlete for UG2023. Two championship titles and one final runners-up finish. Not a bad haul at all. My batchmates, it’s been a pleasure.
