Registrar invites applications for Chief Election Commissioner; Election Timeline Uncertain

On Wednesday, 15th April, 2026, the Registrar's Office issued the call for nominations of Chief Election Officer (CEO) for the Academic Year 2026-27.  This appointment will mark the initial step towards planning and conducting the 2026 Ashoka University Student Government (AUSG) elections. According to the AUSG Constitution, the CEO has the “sole authority to call for elections” of the AUSG upon the dissolution of the incumbent house.

In the penultimate week of the Spring 2026 semester, the student body awaits the timeline of the elections, which can only be announced by the CEO after their appointment. This marks a second consecutive year with a delayed election process, after the withholding of No Objection Certificates (NOC) last year pushed the 2025 AUSG elections to exam week, the last week of the semester in May. This delay is in violation of Section 11.1 of the Election Code, which states that the Election Cycle “must end before the semester’s finals week” and “can be modified by the AUEC when deemed necessary.” However, the delay in appointment of the CEO itself restricts the autonomy of the AUEC to finalize the timeline.

This is not the first election related delay of the academic year. The AUSG and the AUEC exchanged several emails over the winter break regarding the need for by-elections to fill vacancies in the Undergraduate (UG) Council, and the logistical issues of conducting them. However, by-elections failed to take place, leaving the House of Representatives (HoR) with only three remaining members at the time of writing this article.

The Edict reached out to AUEC members as well as the Registrar regarding any progress on the exact timeline for the 2026-27 elections, but received no response from both parties. Samyak Mishra (UG’27), the previously elected CEO earlier this semester, was unable to offer any comments about the timelines and was unable to clarify the status of the AUEC.
