Ashoka University Student Government Election 2025: Results Declared

After much delay in the 2025 Ashoka University Student Government (AUSG) election cycle, the new AUSG has been formed. On May 7th, 2025, the Ashoka University Election Commission (AUEC) declared the results for the Tenth House of Representatives, bringing the cycle to a close.

Candidates from the United Students Front— Insha Husain (UG ‘26) and Ahana Walanju (UG  ‘26) have been elected as President and Vice-President respectively, securing a total of 61% votes.

The Edict reached out to them for a comment, to which they put out the following statement:

“The results are a testament to all the work we have done in the past year, both inside, and outside Student Government’s structures. We are glad that the student body has placed their trust and faith in us so decisively. We are eager to begin the responsibilities of the Presidential duo immediately.”

The Presidential elections saw a turnout of almost 40% out of an electorate of 3016, a slight 1.42% increase from last year. 22% of votes went towards NOTA, and the other 17% went to the other President-Vice President pair, Swapnanil Mukherjee (UG ‘26) and Swayam Nath (UG ‘26). No invalid votes were cast in the Presidential category.

For the Undergraduate Council, a turnout of 41% was observed— a 2% decrease from last year. All 12 candidates fielded by the United Students Front secured their seats in the council. In total, 16 candidates took up the 18 available seats, out of which one was taken by NOTA, while the other has been reserved for international students. Husain, elected as President for the AUSG, also contested for the UG Council seat, which now remains vacant. This leaves 3 UG Council seats currently marked as vacant. The AUEC announced that by-elections will be conducted in the Monsoon ‘25 semester to fill them.

UG’25 voters constituted the highest number of votes in both the UG council as well as Presidential election, the AUEC told The Edict. A total of 7 votes were found to be invalid—three cast from Phd handles, while the other four were cast from YIF handles.

It is also important to note that no nominations were received for the PhD and Master's Council, leaving all five seats in both vacant. By-elections for these will also be conducted as per a timeline decided by the AUEC, they mentioned in an email to the student body.

While the political culture at Ashoka University has seen a massive change over the past year, the voter turnout has remained roughly the same. The lack of nominations received from Phd and Master's candidates also raises concerns regarding the representation in student governance, suggesting that heightened political awareness does not necessarily translate into inclusivity and active participation from all academic cohorts.
